The Tiger Inn is a unique country pub, wine bar, restaurant and jazz club in one! Saved from closure a few years ago by the residents of Stowting, a tiny village near Ashford in Kent, The Tiger has an excellent reputation for its food, conviviality and entertainment.
The food menu is better than average gastropub, with a good range of local fresh produce. This is complemented by an excellent range of unusual beers at this fiercely independent free house, such as draught Red Stripe.
Surroundings are shabby chic verging on French cafe, with bleached floorboards, scrubbed tabletops, mismatching chairs and bookcases to dip into. Outside is a veranda and there's even space to tie up your horse.
For the ultimate Tiger Inn experience I strongly recommend booking a table for quite early on a Monday evening, and then enjoying live jazz from Ian Shawcross from about 9.00 onwards. Make sure you book in advance though. And ladies, watch out for Eric the dancing septegenarian - he'll have you on the dance floor in no time!
My only criticism would be that the staff can sometimes be a little indifferent, but at least they aren't in your face or over-false.
So if you can actually find The Tiger Inn, hidden in the back lanes of the Kent countryside, chances are you'll return time and time again.
