We were taken back to the Kirkstile Inn a year after having a bad experience there and what a difference a new chef makes. Lovely menu using local ingredients and food cooked to a good standard. Award winning ales on sale too. Nice to see a tourist-trail pub serving good food again.

Had read decent reviews of the Kirkstile Inn but it turned out to be yet another pub that churns out mediocre food for tourists who won't be back. The starters of Sweet potatoe and red pepper soup and a smoked salmon dish (palest smoked salmon ever seen) were OK. Nice fresh bread served with the soup. We opted for pasta dishes for our main - A penne carbonara with smoked paprika sauce and a spagetti with chicken and red and green pesto sauce, both served with oily salad. The pasta in the carbonara was overcooked and slightly burnt, there was certainly no paprika sauce, just a ladle full of tasteless cream and oil covering it. The spagetti was worse with a visible oil slick around the sauce which had no pesto whatsoever, or the pine kernals and parmesan listed on the menu. Table next to us had ordered the beef roast dinner (which did look ok) but one was served with roast lamb. Next time we are taking a packed lunch as there are so few pubs in the lakes that served decent food now.
